Like many other home owners, I had just gotten my kid sent off to college and my place cleaned and ready to put up for sale right at the same time the real estate market started to crash.
My timing was bad for putting my home on the market but the one thing I'm happy about is that I purchased an ad with forsalebyowner.com
They have kept my ad online for years for that one time fee that I paid and now because the deal they gave me including advertising my home until it sold, its not costing me a thing. All I have to do is keep the ad updated and wait it out until the market returns back to normal. (Wishful thinking, I know, but I'm trying to stay positive.)

Home Loan Modification
The 7-year balloon loan I have on my home expires this month and my mortgage company is in the process of doing a modification. I have been on the phone with my mortgage company once a week for the past three months to make sure the paper work on the modification was moving through the correct channels and submitted to the department that handles the modification.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep in touch with your mortgage company when it comes time for your home loan to be modified. I believe that constant contact with the mortgage company to make sure they are following through on all the steps helped in the completion of the modification.
So the process doesn't "fall through the cracks," I constantly called and asked my mortgage company specifically, "what was the next step in the process," "when was the step supposed to be completed," and " would you please send me the forms," so I could sign them and get them back on time.
Keep in touch with your mortgage company to move the process along and get it completed when it comes time to modify.
